Empowering Community through Architecture: Bairro da Guarda Playground

Empowering Community through Architecture: Bairro da Guarda Playground

The Bairro da Guarda (Guarda Neighbourhood) in Perafita, Matosinhos, was chosen as the site for the second edition of O LUGAR DE PARTILHA (Shared Place), an autoconstruction initiative led by CASA DA ARQUITECTURA and curated by Roberto Cremascoli (COR arquitectos). This collaborative project involved 14 students from diverse countries, including Portugal, Brazil, Italy, Australia, and Mexico, who worked alongside local residents to plan and construct a playground.

Design Concept

Titled “Uma casa de brincar, e não só” (Not only a playhouse), the proposal features a platform with four divisions, one of which is covered. The design prioritizes versatility and inclusivity, aiming to create a space that fosters social interaction and community engagement beyond just providing a play area for children.

Collaborative Process

The planning and construction phase spanned two weeks, from July 24th to August 10th, 2018, with support from the City Council and social assistance institutions. The collaborative effort between students and residents ensured that the final structure reflected the needs and aspirations of the local community.

Community Impact

Upon its completion, the new playground was unveiled to the residents on August 10th and quickly became a focal point of the neighbourhood. It served as a gathering space for both children and adults, fostering a sense of belonging and community pride.

Future Plans

To further enhance the project, plans are underway to plant trees and bushes in the vicinity during the upcoming autumn season. This addition will not only beautify the playground but also contribute to its ecological sustainability and integration with the surrounding environment.

Through the collaborative efforts of architects, students, and local residents, the Bairro da Guarda Playground stands as a testament to the transformative power of architecture in empowering communities and fostering social cohesion.
