The city of Yunyang, established as part of the Three Gorges construction, has a unique relationship with its surrounding rivers. In 2015, the Yunyang Municipal Government initiated a project to enhance the 35km reservoir bank along the Yangtze and Pengxi Rivers. Tanghua Architect & Associates was tasked with designing three riverside service buildings to connect various parks and the Civil Cultural Center.
Site Integration and Building Morphology
The Tiangongbao site, nestled amidst commercial and residential areas, inspired a design that harmonizes with natural mountain contours. The Sifangjing Service Building, situated on an irregular slope ascending from the city to the river, posed a challenge to integrate with the terrain while optimizing views and connectivity.
Architectural Response
The Sifangjing Service Building features a sloping roof that follows the river’s contours, resembling distant peaks. To minimize earthwork, the design adapts to the site’s height differences, forming a podium with two storeys to the south and one storey to the east and west. This podium creates a sightseeing platform, transforming the landscape and echoing Utzon’s approach to Sydney Bay.
Conceptual Framework
Inspired by the concept of a “Square Well,” the building is arranged along the site border, enclosing a polygonal courtyard. The roof is deconstructed into traditional slope forms, creating openings facing the Pengxi River. This design strategy establishes a sinking courtyard and a scenic platform, enhancing visual connections with the surroundings.
Structural Approach and Materiality
The building adopts a beam-column system reminiscent of traditional architecture, with adjustments for modern structural mechanics. Traditional materials like wood and blue bricks are prominently featured in the exterior design, interior finish, and flooring. Modern elements such as metal, glass, and terracotta complement the traditional palette, bridging past and present architectural sensibilities.

The Yunyang Sifangjing Service Building stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of architecture with its natural and cultural context. By responding to the site’s topography and historical precedents, Tanghua Architect & Associates has created a landmark that not only serves its functional purpose but also enriches the local landscape and fosters community engagement.
