In response to the typical outward-facing fenestration of Singaporean homes, Ming Architects devised a unique architectural form for the Chord House. With a focus on inward-facing views and a towering party wall ensuring privacy from neighboring properties, the design creates a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, inviting natural light deep into the living areas and staircase atrium.
The Concept of Chord
Derived from the concept of how two points on a curve are related, the Chord House embodies an inverted approach. The curved building form accentuates the notion of the courtyard being carved out from within, akin to a negative vase-like space housing a piece of landscaped beauty. This design philosophy extends to the arching staircase, which draws inspiration from the courtyard’s shape, forming a harmonious link between interior and exterior elements.
Materiality and Integration
The exterior of the Chord House is clad in light bush-hammered granite stone, complemented by black aluminum frames for a striking contrast. This exterior stone seamlessly transitions into the interior staircase atrium, blurring the boundary between inside and outside. A carefully selected leopard tree, imported from Malaysia, serves as the centerpiece of the courtyard, casting enchanting shadows within the home throughout the day.
