With a rich history dating back to the Edo period, Shiroiya Ryokan in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, stood as a symbol of tradition for nearly 300 years before closing its doors in 2008. However, in December 2020, the iconic establishment was reborn as SHIROIYA HOTEL, a testament to architectural innovation and cultural preservation, masterfully designed by renowned architect Sou Fujimoto.

Nestled within the newly constructed Green Tower of SHIROIYA HOTEL, the Blue Bottle Coffee Shiroiya Cafe embodies a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscape and historical context, the cafe’s design pays homage to its roots while embracing contemporary aesthetics.
Design Philosophy: Embracing Coziness and Light
The architects at Keiji Ashizawa Design envisioned the Blue Bottle Coffee Shiroiya Cafe as a sanctuary, nestled within a cave-like space within the Green Tower. To maximize natural light and create an inviting atmosphere, a large sliding door was strategically positioned on the north facade. This thoughtful design not only enhances the ambiance but also pays homage to the cafe’s surroundings.
Crafting a Welcoming Environment
Despite its modest size, the cafe was meticulously designed to accommodate patrons of all ages and preferences. Plush sofa benches invite visitors to relax and unwind, while the centrally located large sofa ensures comfort for everyone, from young children to the elderly. The intention was clear: to create a park-like environment where guests can linger and savor their coffee in comfort.
Local Flair: Honoring Tradition Through Design
In a nod to Maebashi’s architectural heritage, locally sourced materials were incorporated into the cafe’s design. Bricks, reminiscent of historical buildings in the area, adorn the floors, while the bar counter showcases the craftsmanship of a local plasterer. Copper accents and paper cords add warmth and texture, echoing the tactile nature of the surrounding environment.

In collaboration with Karimoku Furniture, the cafe’s furniture was custom-designed to complement its unique aesthetic. Each piece was carefully crafted to harmonize with the space, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere for patrons to enjoy.

Continuing the tradition of showcasing local talent, the Blue Bottle Coffee Shiroiya Cafe proudly displays a new artwork by renowned artist Yoshio Shirakawa. Titled “Akagiyama Dragon Body,” the piece pays homage to Maebashi’s rich cultural heritage, serving as a visual representation of the region’s transformative journey.
